Note:  There are at least 72 known species of Treehoppers in Texas.(Ref: Richness of the Nearctic Treehopper Fauna, Lewis L. Dietz & Matthew S.
Wallace, 2012) In addition, a given species can be highly variable. Treat these ID's with caution. In most cases, collected specimens are needed.

Subfamily Smiliinae (Genus Tortistilus and formerly placed under Stictolobus)
Note:  We have seen a few traits differing in these treehoppers. They include size, boldness of marks, leg markings and color, and  eye color/pattern variations.
Most are found only on cypress tree branches. The few that are attracted to light seem to be a bit larger. Some of the specimens shown could be T. lateralis.
Note:  Some species of the Genus Ceresa have been moved to another genus. "Paraceresa, Hadrophallus, Spissistilus, Stictocephala, Tortistilus, Vestistilus"
Of these, Hadrophallus, Spissistilus, Stictocephala, and Tortistilus are known from Texas. Those indicated as Ceresa sp. could be another genus.

Note:  It can be extremely difficult to distinguish the genus from a photo. Photos from multiple angles are often not sufficient, and markings by themselves are misleading. Treat
these ID's with caution, only a few were verified by Treehopper experts. This is another case were specimens need to be collected for a positive identification.
